Meat (and Potatoes!)
I’m not sure how the term “meat and potatoes” became representative of a diet that consists of more than just potatoes and various meats. When someone says, “I’m a meat and potatoes kind of guy,” we take it for granted that he eats more than just those two food items.
What if someone said, “I’m a meat and potatoes and Lucky Charms kind of guy.”? I would immediately wonder, “Is that all this guy eats?” followed by, “Can I do that, too?”

I’d need to see some studies done on it before I could give the “meat, potatoes and Lucky Charms” diet a try. It sounds too good to be true — much like that “pizza and Chinese food” diet I tried last summer.

I don’t like meat. I do, however, like potatoes, in just about every form they come in.

@kev: Sure, you could study it. That, or I could get Billy Mays to scream its benefits at you. That might be just as persuasive.
@Angi: Potatoes are the meat of the vegetable kingdom, so you’re pretty close anyway.
